Night Shift - Lilith Saintcrow If you have read the Dante Valentine series, you will like this one. Both characters are very strong female lead characters with a bit of attitude. They also have someone trying to pull their strings. In this series, Jill Kismet is a Hunter, which means her life largely consists of tracking and slaying hellbreeds (demons). To make her job easier, she has struck an unholy bargain with hellbreed Perry: he lends her his supernatural powers; she sits for emotionally trying s&m encounters with him once a month. (This is because of her trainer Mikhail's urging). Mikhail's training forced her into hell and back. Literally. When something supernatural massacres five city police officers, she senses that the killer is a rogue Were, which means that other Weres have to be called in to hunt him. With a past as a teenage prostitute, Jill is a much darker character than most fantasy heroines, and her grit is palpable. The interesting part about Jill is, she performs exorcisms that priests cannot or will not do. Ironically, the Church believes she is doomed to hell because she kills and consorts with the damned. Jill is also the Santa Luz Police Departmenst consultant in everything demonology and supernatural. You will, like I said, find correlations between Dante and Jill. Both have been transformed in order to better survive and hunting demons. The one thing they both have that other UF heroines don't, the desire to jump into bed with whomever they encounter. There is a romance angle with Saul, who is a were. You are left wondering who actually wears the pants in the relationship. Personally, that's fine with me.
