Torrent - Lisa Tawn Bergren *Rating* 4.0*Genre* YA Fantasy/Romance*Review*This is the first book of 2012 to be finished by me, and I’m happy to say that it was a great choice! Torrent is the final story in the River of Time trilogy and finds Gabi, Lia, and Adri Betarrini returning to the 14th century Italy after saving their father Ben from death.Even though the Betarrini’s weren’t in the present for long, fifteen months have passed since the Betarrini's left the 14th century not only to save themselves, but to find a way to change the course of history when it came to their father and bringing back to the past with them. The Betarrini's understand that they are tempting fate with the Black Plague around the corner which will eventually kill nearly 1/3 the population of Europe. They also seem aware of the fact that they are changing the course of history by not only saving their father, but going back in time so that Gabi can be reunited with Marcello Forelli. They also believe that if they returned to the present, Fate would find a way to take Ben away from them once again.Gabi and Lia, affectionately known as the She-Wolves of Siena, have been put on a pedestal by the citizens of Siena. They are now rich beyond their means after helping stave off the Firenze advance on Siena. They are also number one on the most hated list by the Firenze which doesn’t change in Torrent. Gabi and Marcello are soon reunited but Gabi once again finds that she is kidnapped and used by the Firenze and nearly forced into marrying Lord Rodolfo Greco whom she may or may not have feelings for. If you are a Lord Greco fan, then you will get your share of his exploits as well as desperate fight to rescue him from being killed.Once again Gabi shows her abilities to think on her feet while being forced to fight for not only her life, but for those she loves. I think, however, that the one character that really has grown up a lot is Evangelia. She is awesome with her bow and arrow and courageous as well as totally supportive of her older sister. She and Luca also seem to have connected on several levels as well.I’ve truly liked this series from the start. I liked how Bergren grew Gabi and Lia’s characters up to be wonderful characters that you can cheer on and put yourself into their shoes. It's also a wonderful fairy tale where you have two teenagers who are forced to grow up fast and who both find themselves in love with charming, and wonderful Italian men although in a different time. Another positive for me in this series has been the whole family dynamics. Torrent shows just how wonderful the Betarrini’s are as a family unit who are not only supportive of each other, but go above and beyond the call of duty for a new land that they have adopted. The bottom line for this series is would you give up everything in the present, for an uncertain future and love? In this case, the answer is an empathic yes.
